Pathology collection centres and doctors are obliged to keep patient information confidential, regardless of their age. STI test results are completely confidential, however in Australia, federal and state health departments have statutory notification which requires laboratories and physicians to report cases of infectious disease, including sexually transmitted infections.

The purpose of this is for contact tracing and to obtain statistical data which will help to limit the spread of STIs, not to identify individuals infected with STIs.
